\u00a0Today, September the Eighth, 2015 AD, I, P. K. Thay, hereby lead a delegation comprising the three Committees of the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association, leaders of Hokkien clan associations, and fellow Hokkiens in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to conduct an autumn season prayer at the Hokkien Cemetery.<\/p>\n
A hundred years ago, our Association was entrusted by the local government to manage the Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Cemetery on behalf of the Hokkien community in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.\u00a0 To date, there are a few tens of thousands deceased Hokkien buried here.\u00a0 The large number of people converging here every year during the Qing Ming festival to pay their annual respect to their ancestors is an indication that this is our common place to trace our traditions and memories.<\/p>\n
In this corner of our Cemetery stands a monument commemorating those who died during the Japanese occupation of Malaya.\u00a0 This is a part of our common memory which we must remember and never forget.\u00a0 Those buried here are Chinese who were murdered by the Japanese soldiers during the occupation.\u00a0 After the war, our Association decided to gather the bodies of war victims and bury them in this very location with the hope that their souls would rest in peace. \u00a0A memorial shrine was erected with the joint efforts the Chinese community.\u00a0 This memorial shrine serves the purpose of remembering the victims of the war and of reminding the future generation the cruelty of war.\u00a0 Given the painful lessons of the war, we do not want see the recurrence of such tragedy.<\/p>\n
This year, many countries which were ravaged by the Second World War are marking the 70^{th<\/sup> anniversary of victory over the aggressors.\u00a0 We share the same feelings during this anniversary.\u00a0 During the early forties of the last century, Malaya too went through the dark days of three years and eight months of occupation by the Japanese.\u00a0 Our motherland was occupied by the militarist in the name of creating \u201cco-prosperity\u201d.\u00a0 Hence, today we stand in front of those who had sacrificed their lives during the Second World War and solemnly declare that we are opposed to any attempt to restore militarism.\u00a0 We want to state clearly here that we are resolutely opposed to the security bills proposed by the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.\u00a0 We can see from the large protests in various parts of Japan since the 30^{th<\/sup> August, 2015 that sufferings during a war are not confined to those in the occupied territories.\u00a0 The people living in the aggressor country too do not agree with the new bills \u00a0because in the event of war, the militarist would forced its own people to enter the battlefields to carry out the inhumane act of slaughtering and also faced the possibility of being killed; these are all pressures which no ordinary souls could bear.\u00a0 The unleashing of wars is merely a cold-blooded and unscrupulous tool of a handful of people to fulfill their self-interest.<\/p>\n}}
Confronted with the massive wall of militarism, ordinary citizens like us may appear helpless.\u00a0 But through this declaration, and standing before our ancestors, we resolutely denounce militarism.\u00a0 We shall officially, openly and forthrightly convey our protest to the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Finally, I invite all my fellow colleagues present to stand in attention and observe a minute of silence; to extend our highest tribute and our deepest sorrow to our fellow compatriots who sacrificed their lives during the war and also to express our upmost yearning for peace.<\/p>\n
